It has also been called “the Lost City of the Incas” because it was a mystery until it was discovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911. The construction of the citadel dates from the fifteenth century and is attributed to the Inca Pachacutec. The archaeological site is divided into two sectors covering about 20 hectares.
The agricultural terraces built on the slopes of the mountains, reaching up to 4 meters high. The urban sector consists of several buildings and squares, among which the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana or solar observatory, the Temple of the Three Windows, the Main Temple and the Condor Sector.
Also, there is an impressive carved monolithic piece of 3 meters high and 7 meters base, known as the Sacred Rock. Machu Picchu to build blocks of stone extracted from the surrounding areas were used. The finish of the walls has different qualities and techniques. One of the best achieved walls is the central wall of the Main Temple, in which the blocks fit perfectly. The Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary not only invaluable archaeologically, but it is also associated with rich fauna and flora. In 1983 it was declared Cultural and Natural Heritage by UNESCO.
