DETAILED ITINERARY INCA TRAIL TO MACHU PICCHU 4days and 3nights
Tour Day 1: Start of the Inca Trail--Cusco - Km82 - Ayapata
We set out early in the morning after breakfast to start this epic Inca Trail adventure. After about a 1.5 hour car ride passing through the lovely Sacred Valley in private transport, we will arrive to the trailhead located at Km 82. Here we will meet up with our porters and do a short briefing before we pass through the first checkpoint and start marching to on the cusp of where the high Andes turn into a semi-tropical valley. The first highlight on day 1 of the Inca Trail is arriving to the impressive ruin site of Patallacta. Getting there is mostly flat and a good warm up for what the Inca Trail has in store. After the visit, we meet up again with our porters who will already have lunch set up. Enjoy sitting in a dining tent with tables, chairs, beverages and first class service. Throughout the day you will see impressive landscapes and the changing flora and fauna as we arrive to our campsite at Ayapata where your tent and gear will be waiting for you. We chose this campsite as it is a little further than the traditional Inca Trail route. This means fewer tourists, peace and quiet in this beautiful place and makes for an easier day 2, the most challenging day of the trek. Shortly after arrival, a hot bowl of water for washing will be served to you. Enjoy tea time before dinner and the company of your fellow trekkers before resting for the night.
Tour Day 2: Ayapata - Chaquicocha
After a hearty breakfast, we will pass through different climatic and ecological zones. We will climb to Dead Woman’s Pass or “Warmiwañusca”. Today is considered by many to be the hardest day of the trek; with 2 high passes (Dead Woman's Pass is the highest at 4200m / 13779ft). The payoff is well worth it. We have incredible views of the Andes and will also visit the two ruin sites of Runkuracay and Sayacmarca. There will also be amazing plant life in the Polylepis forest and the chance to spot a white tailed deer. On this challenging day, your guides and porters will be with you to help and motivate you along. Each step brings us closer to the campsite of Chaquicocha (11,800ft / 3600m) and well deserved dinner and rest. As you hear the waterfall off in the distance you will appreciate the beauty and quiet of this place. Watch as the sun sets over the mountains and take in the spirit of the Inca.
Tour Day 3: Chaquicocha - Winay Wayna
Today is a relaxing day to take in some of the most breathtaking scenery that the Inca Trail has to offer. This part of the trail, known as the Inca Flat has gentle ascents and descents. As we move deeper into the cloud forest you will see a significant change in the landscape and different angles of the mountains.
A relatively short day trekking at lower altitude makes for a great opportunity to take photos and take in the experience. We will visit the sites of Phuyupatamarca and Winay Wayna.
We will make camp at Winay Wayna (8,792ft / 2680m) fairly early in the afternoon. Once we are settled in to our campsite, we will have an extended tour of the site followed by tea time and dinner.
Tour Day 4: Winay Wayna - Machu Picchu
Get ready for the highlight of the trip. We make this an early morning so we can arrive at the perfect moment to see Machu Picchu. We say goodbye to our porters and head off the original Inca entrance, the Sungate or “Intipunku”, where you will have stunning views of the Machu Picchu Sanctuary.
As you make your way down a curvy trail to the citadel, you will watch as the views of this place change. You will have a 2 hour guided tour of the most important sites followed by the afternoon free to explore on your own. Please let us know if you would like to hike Huaynapicchu or Machu Picchu Mountain at the time of booking as permits for these hikes on the grounds of Machu Picchu have to be bought separately from your Inca Trail permits. We will make our down to the town of Aguas Calientes (Machupicchu pueblo) and you will have some time for lunch before taking the train back to Cusco.
